BEIJING, June 27 (InfoChina) - Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation’s (SMIC, NYSE: SMI, HK: 0981) Wuhan foundry will start construction on June 28.
As SMIC’s third 12-inch foundry in China after the two respectively in Shanghai and Beijing, the Wuhan foundry is expected to be completed by the end of 2007 or the first quarter of 2008.
When its first phase goes to operation, the annual capacity will amount to 25,000 chips.
The foundry requires a total investment of more than 10 billion yuan, which will be provided by Wuhan local government. SMIC will rent the workshop, offer technology and management experience and will purchase the plant after three to five years’ operation.
The Wuhan foundry perfects SMIC’s production base distribution in China, enabling its production extending from east China and north China to central China and covering all kinds of chips including the solar cell chip.
