BEIJING, August 29 (InfoChina) – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) sued in the United States that Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC, NYSE: SMI, HK: 0981) infringed its commercial secrets.
TSMC claimed compensation and asked SMIC to cease the activity. SMIC said the suit was “very unexpected” as the two sides had reached a compromise as early as last year and also signed an agreement thereof, China Business News quoted a PR source of SMIC as saying on August 29. The source said it is a competition strategy of TSMC and its purpose is to retard the development of its rival. The suit is its second case. TSMC, the biggest chip foundry in the world, once brought a suit against SMIC for the same reason in 2005 and the two companies agreed that SIMC should pay TSMC 175 million US dollars in six years. |
