SMIC Chengdu foundry to add investment of 413 million dollars

CHENGDU, April 5 (InfoChina) – The 8-inch wafer foundry of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC, NYSE: SMI, HK: 0981) in Chengdu, southwest China, has decided to make an additional investment of 413 million US dollars for its second phase project.
The second investment will be used to expand a main chip-producing plant and a power plant, with a total floor space of 97,910 square meters. Up completion, the foundry will boast a production capacity of 70,000 wafers per month.
SMIC’s Chengdu foundry is a government-backed chip plants. The preliminary investment for the foundry came from the Chengdu city government. SMIC takes charge of management and operation.
The first phase of the foundry involved investment of 270 million dollars and will start trial operation in April this year, which is designed to make 50,000 wafers a year within three to five years after production begins. (Edited by Yang Liu,
