Netease to set up R&D center for online games in Hangzhou

BEIJING, Jan. 3 (InfoChina) – Netease.com Inc. (NTES.NASDAQ) has announced to invest 300 million yuan to establish a new research and development center in southeast China’s Hangzhou City.
The center is expected to hire 3,000 to 4,000 people and focus on online games.
As early as July 2006, Netease founded a Hangzhou subsidiary. It is, as market information goes, developing and testing several online games and game engines, which will come into the market in about two years.
William Ding, chief executive officer of Netease, said that it is important to develop online games independently, so that the company can control core technologies, although the business may not be lucrative in the short term.
In addition, the company is concentrating on the development of other products as Yodao search engine.To enlarge its users base of the search engine, it has launched some specific services, such as online dictionary and Yodao Reader. (Edited by Wei Wei,
